What Foods to Avoid with Celiac Disease

A person who has celiac disease should avoid everything made from gluten or containing gluten. Here is the list of some foods that of gluten entirely:

  • Wheat, Wheat flour, Barley, Rye, Pasta including Macaroni, Spaghetti or any Pasta in the Soup
  • Baked products like Bread, Biscuits, Muffins, Cakes. Only use them if labeled as gluten-free and are made of other flour like buckwheat
  • Semolina, Butter, and Malt unless the label as gluten-free.

These are some foods that do not contain gluten naturally, but gluten comes into contact with them. At the same time, packaging and handling, so they must be avoided by people who have celiac disease.   1. Hi Lucky, Thank you for this article my sister was diagnosed with Celiac disease however we don’t have any family member that has suffered from this. As you mentioned at the beginning of your article I believe it may have been part of nurture and that meant that she had to stick to gluten free food. I may have to pass this on to her just to make sure she is aware what she should eat.

  3. I have heard of celiac disease but never knew much about it. Now, thanks to you, I have learned a lot about this disease, and what to do about it.

    Fortunately, my family and I do not have this. Still, it is good to know about this in case I have any friend or loved one suffering from this. And I can be empathetic about it. Especially when I invite them to my home for a meal. I will know what can be served and what should be avoided.

    Is there a cure for this ailment? Sorry if this is a silly question.

  7. I can confirm all you have shared in this article is completely true and the best advice for this disease, I have experienced intestine damage due to gluten and even today I have to eat any type of grains in moderation even gluten-free.

    I strongly urge everyone to read the ingredients on everything you are going to purchase, I have got lazy and thought since I was buying the same brand and product I was safe but you never know until you get a flare-up that the company has changed their ingredients.

      I hope you went already for check-up on your intestine damage and is not Celiac Disease, because if it happens to be it, you need to go 100% gluten free. Any small amount of gluten triggers your immune system to fight with your small intestine. You don’t need that, because it can lead to the whole lot if health issues.
      True, Companies change their manufacturing procedures very often due to many different reasons. The only thing you must trust is the product label, you must read and understand what you eat. Thanks for your comment and you a speedy recovery.

  9. That was a really informative article about Celiac disease, Lucky. I’d heard of it before and knew a girl in college who suffered from it. But I never knew it could be lethal if ignored and left untreated.
    Seems like one more case of humans being allergic to things in the modern world. Of course, we’re exposed to all sorts of chemicals in the environment, let alone in our food. It’s no wonder allergy rates and auto-immune diseases are on the rise.
    While I’m not a celiac myself, my diet seems to come close to what you recommend for them. I lowered my carbohydrate intake after being diagnosed as pre-diabetic and switched to wholegrain variants of things like rice and pasta.
    You don’t say if celiac disease is curable or not. I’m guessing it isn’t once it asserts itself. But I do wonder if it has anything to do with the types of gut fauna in a person’s intestines and whether something like a fecal implant could actually cure the disease by changing the proportions of good and bad bacteria in the gut?

      That’s true, in nowadays there a lot of things that cause us to be ill and food is one of them. It is imperative for humans to know what they eat what effect does it have towards your health. It is curable, for now the only cure is to go 100% gluten free. It is possible that the gut fauna also known as gut flora can sometimes fight celiac disease but most of the time it triggers the celiac disease. Wish you a speedy recovery with your celiac disease.   10. Fantastic article on what to eat and what to avoid with Celiac Disease, I have a question for you how come I was diagnosed by blood work not being intolerant of gluten but eventually they did a biopsy of my intestine and found it has been damaged due to gluten?

    Just think how many people might be suffering and not even be aware of why they are so sick if their physician only goes by their blood work.

      Firstly it takes time before your blood can show if you got celiac disease and according to “Celiac.org” “issue Transglutaminase Antibodies (tTG-IgA) – the tTG-IgA test will be positive in about 98% of patients with celiac disease who are on a gluten-containing diet. The test’s sensitivity measures how correctly it identifies those with the disease. The same test will come back negative in about 95% of healthy people without celiac disease. The test’s specificity refers to how accurately it is able to identify those without the disease.2 The tTG test is the most sensitive test for celiac disease. Though rare, this means patients with celiac disease could have a negative antibody test result.”
