Celiac disease (CD) is a severe multi-system autoimmune disease that occurs in genetically predisposed people, affecting about 1% of the population worldwide. In which gluten (a protein found in cereal grains such as wheat, barley, and rye) ingestion results in damage in the small intestine. People who have Celiac disease, undiagnosed are at risk for long-term health complications.

Symptoms of Celiac Disease

For adults include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss
  • Bloating and gas
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Constipation

Less than half of people with celiac disease had different signs and symptoms to the digestive system, including:

  • Anemia, usually from iron deficiency
  • Fluid retention
  • Infertility
  • Loss of bone density (osteoporosis) or softening of the bone (osteomalacia)
  • Itchy, blistery skin rash
  • Mouth ulcers

Kids with celiac disease are more likely to suffer digestive problems than adults, including:

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Nerve damage, leading to tingling in legs and feet
  • Muscle wasting, weakness, and cramps
  • Constipation
  • Gas
  • Pale, foul-smelling stools with excess fat in them

Variations in symptoms may depend on:

  • the amount of gluten consumed
  • the age at which a person starts eating gluten
  • the level of damage to the small intestine

Let’s discuss a few of the symptoms of celiac disease in detail:

  1. Diarrhea

Diarrhea is among the most severe signs of celiac disease. Within a few days to a few weeks, medication would mitigate and overcome diarrhea. The soft, watery stool is one of the first signs several people experience before the celiac disease identified. Diarrhea decreased for many patients within a few days of treatment, but the average time for symptoms to fully resolved was four weeks.

Bloating is one such common symptom encountered by people with celiac disease. Celiac disease causes inflammation in the digestive tract, which can contribute to bloating and various other adverse digestive problems. Constipation leads to a stubble that is hard to move, leading to illness. Nevertheless, even those with celiac disease may find it challenging, preventing constipation even on a strict gluten-free diet. Constipation is because a gluten-free diet leaves out many high-fiber items, such as wheat, which can lead to lower fiber intake and lower stool frequency.

Psychological symptoms such as fatigue are also common in comparison to the many physical symptoms of celiac disease. Depression is more frequent and severe in adults with celiac disease than in the general population. Nevertheless, the likelihood of depression may be that following a long-term, gluten-free diet.

Celiac disease may cause dermatitis herpetiformis, a type of itchy skin rash that may appear on the elbows, knees, or buttocks. I work with a colleague who has struggled with managing her Celiac Disease for many years, and just as you conclude in your post, she sticks to a strict gluten-free diet to manage her illness. Close attention to nutrition and daily exercise has enabled her health to improve, and to live with her a serious health condition like Celiac’s Disease, that can be a seriously debilitating illness for many people.

  3. Hi Lucky, this is a very interesting article about a condition that I am just hearing  of, and finding out about. I. live in the tropics in Jamaica, and from time to time we hear of people having a lot of those symptoms that you listed. I am now wondering if it could be a sign of this disease. I note that gluten should be avoided in persons who might have it. In my country people eat bread but there are many people who never eat bread and their carbs come mainly from yam, cassava, green bananas and sweet potatoes and rice. Celiac sounds like a condition I would never like to have but I am wiser after having read this article. Thank you

    1. Thanks JJ for your comment. Yes many people sometimes see these symptoms but because they don’t know about the disease, they turn to suspect other disease. What is shocking is that even the Medical Doctor quite a number of them world wide don’t take this disease into consideration when patients mentioning these symptoms, they rather test for other disease leaving this one out. That is why I said on my post for Celiac Disease I said it is overlooked. Hence I wanted to inform the public that this disease if out there and it can make your life a complicated one.     I have heard about Celiac Disease but, didn’t really know what it was all about. 

    I see gluten is a major factor related to celiac disease. I see it also has a genetic connection. You have done a great job with your research and communicating it to the reader. I am also glad to see that certain countries are regulating the disease with proper diet. You have done an excellent job of listing the symptoms. Also I have gained the knowledge that there are more than one type of celiac disease. 1 in 10 have a genetic connection. Living with a disease attacking your small intestine I am sure would be pretty nasty. It is amazing how crucial a role diet plays in many diseases.

      Many people know that there is such a disease but don’t really know what exactly is all about it, that made me to pick the topic. When going through the internet very few that cover the topic in a broader aspect, majority only highlight on what is it all about.

      Yes,  genetics also plays a role. When someone in a family diagnosed with Celiac Disease, it is safer to watch closely the symptoms and if there is any similarities get tested. 

      Diet is very much important when it comes not only to Celiac Disease, but in our human life. We can achieve a lot with just diet, apart from medication. As Hippocrates said “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”

  8. Thanks for the article. I was interested to read this as a friend had suffered with some type of illness but went undiagnosed for quite some time. He lost a huge amount of weight and was not well at all, including depression (not helped probably with not knowing what the problem was). Finally, he was diagnosed as a Celiac and has since been on the improve with strict adherence to diet and gluten free products. Thanks for the information.
